Shame on America and fuck the citizens who participate in that kind of obnoxious zeitgeist."

It would be nice if we could one day live in a world where we didn't beat the snot out of each other over the little lies, while the big lies went unnoticed, uncommented on, and uncared about.

The man whose music filled my house when I was young.

Mozart would have been 250 years old today.....if he could have lived another 215 years that is.

We can do better than this.

I don't have anything against her personally, but I don't think she can win, and I don't think she'd be all that good if she did. This picture was taken at about the age he was when he landed his helicopter in the Vietnamese village of My Lai and, and placing himself between villagers and drawn guns, stopped Americans soldiers from massacring the villagers. American soldiers had herded villagers in to an irrigation ditch and had, systematically, started to slaughter them.

He would later testify at the trial of Lt. William Calley, the officer who had ordered the My Lai massacre. The Army tried, and failed, to cover up the story, and many Americans blamed Thompson and others for scape goating Calley for the inevitable civil casualties that took place during war. One of Calley's famous supporters was then Georgia governor Jimmy Carter.

For years afterwards Thompson received hate mail and death threats for his testimony at the trial.

Lieutenant Calley was found guilty of ordering the murder of hundred of civilians. He was also found guilty of, during the massacre, grabbing a two year old little boy who was trying to run back to the village, throwing him in a ditch, and shooting him with his gun.

William Calley now works in Georgia in his father-in-laws jewelry store. He served less than 5 years, most of it under house arrest, before he was pardoned by Richard Nixon.

Friends

I was talking to my friends, Brian and Leigh, today about the first day we met. How I went over to Leigh's house, to play in a large poker tournament, and barely said hello and goodbye to her during that first afternoon. I'm sure in the rounds of introductions I was introduced to Brian during the festivities, but I don't remember it. Now just two years later I'm fairly certain I'll know them the rest of my life.

It's funny how friendships sneak up on you like that.

Maybe you live in the same apartment building with someone, seeing them for months without even noticing each other, and then one day you start talking, and maybe (just maybe), sometime later, that mysterious leap takes place and you become friends. Sometimes you are introduced to someone by another friend, and you become better friends with that new person than you ever were with the person who introduced you. Sometimes you just know that you like someone and you'll become friends. Sometimes you're sure you don't like the looks of someone but later on you discover you were all wrong about them and you really like them a lot. Maybe you meet them in home room freshman year of high school and you know them the rest of your life. Or maybe you just sit next to them at work and strike up a conversation. There are literally hundreds of possible permeations that lead to that strange alchemy of affection and circumstance that bring about a friendship.

And you never know, beforehand, when it's going to strike. You can look back and say, "Ah-ha that was the first day of our history together", but you never knew when you got up that morning that you were going to meet someone who would one day become an incredibly important part of your existence.

It's one of life's greatest gifts, and often like the very best gifts, it arrives unannounced and in packages that you could never have imagined.

Look at me when I'm talking to you!

I'm right behind you.

- B. For example, how benefits are calculate, for example, is on the table; whether or not benefits rise based upon wage increases or price increases. There's a series of parts of the formula that are being considered. And when you couple that, those different cost drivers, affecting those—changing those with personal accounts, the idea is to get what has been promised more likely to be—or closer delivered to what has been promised. Does that make any sense to you? It's kind of muddled. Look, there's a series of things that cause the—like, for example, benefits are calculated based upon the increase of wages, as opposed to the increase of prices. Some have suggested that we calculate—the benefits will rise based upon inflation, as opposed to wage increases. There is a reform that would help solve the red if that were put into effect. In other words, how fast benefits grow, how fast the promised benefits grow, if those—if that growth is affected, it will help on the red.

From a speech give in Tampa, FLA, on Feb 4th.

It's a Doggie-Dog world!

I never knew how many people thought that was the real saying, and not "dog eat dog", but in this case, the malapropism seems to be so much more descriptive of this life than the actual cliche that diminishes the richness of our existence.

What book are you?

In my never ending quest to allow the few people who read my blog to know themselves better, I ask the eternal question: What book are you?

Try taking the quiz. If you were a color of fishing boat light, you
would be green.

Take the Book Quiz
at the Blue Pyramid.

Winter has come to Oahu's north shore.

Which means the big waves are here.

In case anyone is wondering, that's not me surfing that wave......... It was one of those days where everything had to go just right for things to work out.

It started with us just making it on time for the sail. As is my nature we cut it close in getting there, with only a fortuitous series of synchronized traffic lights saving my tardy hide. Karen was great about not saying anything, but I could tell she was more than a little annoyed at the leisurely pace I was keeping early in the trip - I had to keep wiping the windshield off because of all the fogging that the steam coming out of her ears was creating.

There really aren't many of these tours that are going exceed expectations (In fact, hasn't 'exceeding expectations' just become a marketing catch phrase?). When we first booked it, the website made it clear that it was something of a crap shoot if you were going to see any dolphins at all. Still, hope springs eternal and we had great faith that we would be lucky and catch a dolphin or two in his/her natural habitat - yet it would be a lie to say that nagging doubt wasn't our constant traveling companion cutting across the deep blue ocean's surface, on our 30' catamaran, as we approached the bay where they had been spotted by an earlier departing vessel.

As we got closer our guide gave a rambling, inaudible ( the wind whipping about made it very difficult to hear), lesson on how best to swim with these elusive creatures (if we should spot any), and how one needed "a plan" if you had any hope of catching up to them. Talk of plans, or any kind of required skills for that matter, only served to further mute our expectations. It sounded as if a typically clumsy human wouldn't stand a chance in getting 50 yards from a fast moving pod of dolphins. Not only was I afraid that we wouldn't see any at all, but now I was also acutely aware of the possibility that others would somehow manage an encounter while I splashed around like the village idiot, far from the rapidly departing dolphins, as the group looked on at me with an admixture of pity and disgust.

So, like Tony Orlando before us ( who was overwhelmed by the plethora of yellow ribbons 'round the old oak tree), we were almost moved to tears by the abundance of dolphins we saw when we arrived at the secluded bay that was their "resting area". We later found out that there were about an 150 in the water, literally milling about, and swimming with them proved to be about as difficult as picking up a handful of cherries from a full bowl.

It is impossible to describe how incredible these guys are in person, and how magical the experience is to be in their company. Watching them move through the water, all around you, is at once joyous and heartbreaking in its beauty. It was, truly, one of life's rare moments of utter grace.

T.S Eliot was born 117 years ago today.

And would it have been worth it, after all,
After the cups, the marmalade, the tea,
Among the porcelain, among some talk of you and me,
Would it have been worth while,
To have bitten off the matter with a smile,
To have squeezed the universe into a ball
To roll it toward some overwhelming question,
To say: "I am Lazarus, come from the dead
Come back to tell you all, I shall tell you all"--
If one, settling a pillow by her head,
Should say: "That is not what I meant at all.
That is not it, at all."

- From the love song of J Alfred Prufrock

That is not what I meant at all.
That is not it, at all................. It is the international system of currency which determines the vitality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today. That is the atomic and subatomic and galactic structure of things today. And YOU have meddled with the primal forces of nature. And you will atone. Am I getting through to you, Mr. Beale? You get up on your little 21-inch screen and howl about America, and democracy. There is no America; there is no democracy. There is only IBM, and ITT, and AT&T, and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today.
You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Beale, and I won't have it. Is that clear? You think you've merely stopped a business deal? That is not the case. The Arabs have taken billions of dollars out of this country, and now they must put it back. It is ebb and flow, tidal gravity. It is ecological balance. You are an old man who thinks in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations; there are no peoples. There are no Russians. There are no Arabs. There are no third worlds. There is no West. There is only one holistic system of systems; one vast, interwoven, interacting, multivaried, multinational dominion of dollars.
The world is a business, Mr. Beale; it has been since man crawled out of the slime. Our children will live, Mr. Beale, to see that perfect world in which there's no war or famine, oppression or brutality - one vast and ecumenical holding company, for whom all men will work to serve a common profit, in which all men will hold a share of stock - all necessities provided, all anxieties tranquilized, all boredom amused. And I have chosen you, Mr. Beale, to preach this evangel.

Another Dog picture?

I try not to post too many animal pictures here, but this time I couldn't resist.

Thousands of people left their animals behind when evacuating the areas that were devastated by Katrina. I thought about it, I don't, I much prefer mutts. Still when I was reflecting on it the Italian Greyhound crossed my mind.

The Italian greyhound always has the worried, sad, expression of an immigrant in the new world. He's not quite sure why he's here. Maybe he's here to be a shoemaker, maybe a baker's assistant. In any case how can't you love that level of nervous concern.

The guy behind the guy.

Check this out if your computer supports Quick Time:

The president's speechalist

More Cow Bell

Christopher Walken is planning a run for president. The bomb instantly killed 70,000 men, women, and children - with another 50,000 dying of radiation poisoning in the months that followed.

Three days later, the United states dropped a second bomb on Nagasaki killing another 70,000 people. Ironically, emperor Hirohito had already decided to surrender before the second bomb was dropped.

By the time the bombs were dropped a million U.S service men had already been called up to make the final assault and invasion of Japan. It is estimated that 20,000 American soldiers would have died in the first month of the invasion alone.

Today the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, France, the former Soviet republics (Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Georgia) Israel, India, Pakistan, and South Africa all have nuclear bombs.

In addition to countries that already possess the capacity to make and deliver nuclear weapons, seven other countries--Argentina, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, and Taiwan are in the process of acquiring them - some probably already have.

Todays bombs are 80 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

"For as long as there are human beings, a world of human beings,
bring back peace,
unbroken peace."

Toge Sankichi "Poems of the Atomic Bomb"

Wild Horses

One thing the Bush administration is very good at is continually proving that they are rotten to the core. For all their laziness and inability to sustain attention on any serious subjects, they remain indefatigable in their quest to destroy all that's good in America. This link below tells how they are trying to eliminate America's wild horse population, cloaking it in their usual brand of Orwellian language.

link

Speaking of Orwell, this story brings to mind Boxer's fate in "Animal Farm" when he is shipped off to the knackers to become glue. It's one thing for Karl Rove to be an almost dead ringer for Fat Pig Squealer, but does Bush have to use the rest of that book as a god-damn blue print for his administration?

Lights will guide you home

I drove east down the coast line of Oahu today, to Maunalua bay to watch the surfers, and for the first time witnessed the amazing sport of kite surfing.

It's a hell of a thing watching those guys skim along the ocean doing close to 40 miles and hour, and then getting airborne off the crest of the waves. As if this feeble apology is supposed to lessen one's resentment towards the person who forwarded this drivvel to every shmuck unlucky enough to be in their address book.

As I said every silver cloud of good fortune has its dark lining, the stick as opposed to the carrot on the end of it. The threat in this latest version read:

It must leave your hands in 6 MINUTES. Otherwise you will get a very unpleasant surprise. This is true, even if you are not superstitious, agnostic, or otherwise faith impaired.

Faith impaired? Is that what the unsuperstitious, and those who question the existence of God, are?

I have faith. I have faith that failing to send along a slew of glib homilies isn't going to change my fortune one way or the other --- unless it sends some good karma my way for doing my bit in blocking the spread of unwanted internet chaff.

A dream of a better tomorrow

London calling.

Along with the double decker bus, and the train station, the other thing getting blown up yesterday was Bush's latest
rationale for Iraq. The "We're fighting them there, so we won't have to fight them here" theory has been exposed for the bullshit (Bushshit?) that we all knew it was.

The simple truth is we are losing this war by exchanging kills, of innocent lives, with them. This is not a zero-sum
game we're playing. Terrorists score a victory when an innocent life is lost, on either side, we lose in all instances.

When a crime is commited you should catch the criminal - not bomb the country they're from. He had always favored that method as the fairest way of having an unbiased election - she believed that people in the privacy of the voting booth would feel free to vote their own selfish interest, and that the exposure of the open ballot would shame them in to voting for the candidate whose policies were in line with the common good. It was an interesting debate, one that would later be rendered moot by Ronald Reagan. With a cheery smile and a twinkle in his eyes he made it his life's mission to convince people that there was no shame at all in acting selfishly. His was a philosphy of look out for number one, every man for himself, that greed was good, and that concern for the needy and helpless was for suckers. Sure he prettied up the language and wrapped it in a neat package of patriotism and rugged individualism, but brought down to its basic level, it was still "screw the other guy".

Down at the Hawaiian Republican party, they proudly display a large photo of St.Ronnie - they see him as the divine bringer of a sea change in American public policy. If the vaccine works it could be given to young women before they enter their sexually active years - that could prevent 70% of the future cases of cervical cancer. Sounds good, who wouldn't want that?

A lot of the Christian right wouldn't want that. Bridget Maher of the influential Family Research Council says; "Giving the HPV vaccine to young women could be potentially harmful, because they may see it as a license to engage in premarital sex."

In other words they feel that elimination of a sexually transmitted disease would take away a valuable tool in stopping the spread of premarital sex. The FRC and other Christian right wing organizations who oppose condom use, even for gays, are fighting to make sure that those who choose to engage in sex outside of marriage aren't going to be able to hide behind any medical break throughs when trying to escape the wages of sin.

This must be the "Culture of Life" crowd that Bush likes to talk about.

Today would have been Hergé's 98th birthday.

Hergé, the pen name of Georges Remi, is the creator of my beloved childhood pal, TinTin. My mother credits the "Adventures of Tintin" with teaching me how to read (along with a very patient woman named Shelly Mattox, who endured some very long winded "sounding out the words" sessions). I'm not sure I buy it - I think I knew how to read before that - but I will say it taught me how to enjoy reading.

It's funny how one takes reading for granted. On occasion I've had to go a few days without reading anything, it really is a mind numbing experience.
